The courses in Parley’s Ocean School Portal have been created to showcase the beauty and fragility of the oceans. Our goal is to help you gain the knowledge and skills necessary to go out there and take action!
Courses provide video instruction accompanied by content or “deeper dives” into knowledge areas. In total, each chapter should take 15-20 minutes to complete. Courses also include a quick knowledge test, typically in the form of a multiple-choice quiz or poll and a resource guide for further inspiration, learning, and exploration.
Each course within Parley’s Ocean School Portal varies in length and number of chapters. Most chapters include a video lesson, a written “deeper dive”, resources and a knowledge test. By clicking on the chosen course in the Course Catalog Page you will be able to see the estimated time commitment of the entire course at the top of the page.
All of the courses on Parley’s Ocean School Portal are completely free! The platform is designed to be a collaborative virtual space where everyone can connect, learn, and join the global ocean movement.
All courses on Parley’s Ocean School Portal are listed in the Course Catalog Page. After you are signed in, you can click on any of the “Ongoing” courses in the catalog to join and get started. For “Upcoming” courses you are invited to click on the “Notify Me” button to get a reminder when the course goes live.
If you want to get a course certificate, yes, but don't worry, you can submit your answers as many times as you need. We believe that attempting, failing and trying again is a huge part of everyone's learning process. Courses are considered complete when all videos have been watched and quizzes attempted and answered correctly. Once you are done don't forget to click the “Done” button and go to your Profile Page to claim your Parley Ocean School Certificate!
The Parley Ocean School Portal is focused on your progress, not your grade. This is intentional. Courses include quiz questions, but don’t worry, you are invited to try attempting the quizzes as many times as you need - trying is also a part of the learning process. As quiz questions are answered correctly you will see your progress percentage go up. You will achieve 100% progress by completing chapters, watching videos and answering all quiz questions correctly.
Once you’ve started a Parley Course, you can find a “Progress” tab on the course details page. It is the second tab in the top left. There is a progress bar and percentage, showing how far you’ve advanced in the course. You advance by completing chapters, watching videos and answering quizzes correctly. We invite you to try attempting the quizzes as many times as you need - trying is also a part of the learning process. By getting the correct answer your quiz score will change to 1/1.
Below the text section, each chapter from the course is listed. A checkmark will show up at the end of the chapter name once you have completed that chapter. You complete a chapter by getting a correct answer (1/1) in all of your quizzes. Collect all the checkmarks to earn a Parley Ocean School Certificate on your Profile page.
You can find your Parley Ocean School Certificates on your Profile page. You earn a course certificate by completing the chapters, videos and quizzes in each course.
Absolutely! You are invited to take courses individually, as a class or a group. Approach the Parley Ocean School Portal as an opportunity to engage your community and build up your skill sets to become better advocates for the oceans.
We also encourage you to share what you learn, discuss “Deeper Dives” together with friends and family, and inspire them to create their accounts and take their learning even further.
If you are a teacher or a facilitator and would like guidance on how to host these courses in your educational session, please contact Parley by clicking on the “Support” button on the lower right of the page.
No, there is no limit on how long it takes to finish a course unless indicated otherwise in the course description. Chapters build upon each other, so optimal learning will take place if chapters are taken in sequence and in a reasonable time from the start of the course, but the courses will not close out if longer time is taken.
Your progress results within specific chapters and courses will only be accessible by you. Certificates can be seen publicly on your Profile page.
If you run into any technical issues please click on the “Support” button on the lower right of the page and let us know what you encountered. We are always making improvements to the page and welcome your feedback.
